The purpose of this document is to provide potential or existing contributors a high-level view on what Tyche Insights cares about.

1. Write the data story that you would want to read

2. Public data - whether open data or difficulty obtained - is the primary fuel for our stories

3. Unbiased stories, delivered with facts and context, are more powerful than a story told with obvious or underlying bias

4. Circle back with the data owners - provide feedback and demonstrate that “their” data is being used to inform

5. Explain the process that you’re using - many readers will want to see the data and the analytical journey that you follow to get to your destination

6. Learn along the way - about the subject matter, analytical techniques, data visualizations and more

7. Research should be replicable - stakeholders will want to review and validate the processes that underpin a data story and, in the future, we may want to update the data story with new data

8. Anyone (a reader, someone who wants to use the data, the original data owner) should be able to review and validate the processes AND in the future the author (or anyone who takes over ownership of the story) may want to update the story with new data.”

9. Behind the data are people - the data describes people and their actions, the data are collected by people as a function of their job - be respectful and considerate in your data story

10. Data stories don’t need to be exposés - they need to inform, educate and have a reader walk away feeling smarter or able to take action with their new-found knowledge.
