We want every data storyteller to preserve the process that they used. Visibility into the processes that you use provides a few benefits:
- speaks to the credibility of your work
- enables future updates of the article w/ new data
- assists with the editorial review
Importantly, others may want to leverage the process and tools that you create to tell their story.
A process document can be of any format - it could be a Word doc, Google doc, notes in a Jupyter notebook or Google Collaboratory, or many other forms. The content in the process document can include:
- Working notes
- Statistics
- Sequence of events of any data wrangling or data loading and transforming
- Metadata on the input or output
- Tools used and how they were used
- Missteps and failures
