You may have started to data storytell through one of two paths. You might have started with an idea or concept for analysis and, from there, identified one or more relevant public datasets. Conversely you may have found a dataset and wondered what you may be able to achieve looking at the dataset. Put another way, your interest could demand-side (“I have a question, let me find the data”) or supply-side (“I have data, what questions can I answer with it?”).
Regardless of your approach you will come up with one or more questions:
- There always is a default question - “what interesting and informative things can I find in the data?”
- Then there are the specific questions - what? how much? who? where? in comparison to? When?
- Put down a few thoughts on why this subject was of interest to you - is it a topic that personally impacts you, is it topical, is it controversial, or just “hey this data is available, let’s look into it”?
