Looking around at data stories, especially those produced by the experts at USAFacts and Visual Capitalist it’s easy to get intimidated.  Creating great data visualizations is an art and a science that takes practice.

Target data visualizations that complement and inform your data story, and that fit in with your skillset and time.  Possible data visualizations - content and form - include:

  • Tables of data imported into Wiki tables that can be sorted and copied from
  • Screenshots of tables from Excel, Google sheets or a Jupyter notebook
  • Screenshots of graphs and charts created in a spreadsheet, through Python tools such as pyplot or Plotly
  • Static map screenshots showing point locations or a thematic map
  • Active maps such as an ArcGIS Online, MapBox map or a Google MyMap
  • Active data visualizations using Tableau Public, Google Data Studio, or RAWGraphs
  • Infographics, created with tools that range from Figma to Canva

If you are embedding third party resources, determine how you would like to have them presented.  Do you want a reader to see an embedded frame with the active content?  Do you want a reader to hit a separate web site to see the visualization or map?  If you are creating static images be sure to preserve the original images as PNG or JPG for the buildout of the web presentation.
