TycheHowTo:PersonalizePreferences

Tyche uses the Mediawiki framework which allows each registered user to customize the editing, reading and searching environment. Preferences can be access by clicking the User image and selecting Preferences.

Note that Mediawiki has a longer article about preferences that you may wish to explore.
Preferences - suggestions
There are a number of suggestions that we can make for preferences. Below we review the more commonly used or needed preferences by tab in the preferences UI.
User Profile
- Internationalisation > how you prefer to be described? Set to They, He or She
- Internationalisation > language. Note that changing the language will only change the language that common UI elements are presented in, e.g. in "fr - francais" "Main Page" will become "Page d'accueil". This will not change the language of the data story content.
- Signature. You may change your signature to something other than your account name, e.g. you may want to change your signature to your full name, you may change your signature to associate yourself with a group of data storytellers, or some other reason. Please be respectful if you change your signature.
Appearance
- Skin. We recommend using Vector (2022) although other skins are available.
- Skin Preferences. We recommend both options which will assist with mobile readability and general reading experience.
- Date format. Set to your regional liking.
- Time offset. Set to your time zone.
- Enable Media Viewer. This will provide a better experience looking at images.
Editing
Most default Editing settings work well, we suggest ensuring the following are set:
- Editor > Warn me when I leave
- Editor > Enable the visual editor
- Preview > Show preview before edit box
- Discussion pages > all settings default
- Editor > Mark all edits minor by default. If you are doing significant amount of editing (e.g. reviewing dozens of pages for basic wordsmithing and small copy corrections) and you're performing many minor edits, you may wish to turn this option on by default so that a small change to punctuation or spelling doesn't get recognized as a major edit.
Recent changes
Most default Recent changes settings work well, we suggest ensure the following are set:
- Display options - 7 days and 50 edits
- Advanced options > Group changes by page
- Changes shown > do not select any options
Watchlist
Your watchlist will be highly personalized by the volume of content that you are creating, or how often you are editing an article where you are primary vs. secondary writer/editor, or how you work. We would suggest paying attention to the Watchlist and how you use it. If you have not used the watchlist, click the "star on 3 lines" button which typically appears as an icon next to your user name. You will then see the watchlist.

Search
General > Search results. The default of 20 search results can be modified based on what you are looking for and how you examine the search results.
